Cave Canem Mosaic Set. Small stones - great art

Mosaics are among the jewels of artisanal art. Their production was widespread in ancient times across many cultures. When the first pictures and ornaments made of small pieces were created is not precisely known. Near Ur, the legendary city between the Euphrates and Tigris, palm trunks were covered with mosaic stones using asphalt 2500 - 3000 years ago. Various colored pebbles were used in Greece at the beginnings of this art form before colorful fragments of glass or stone were used to create increasingly detailed and elaborate works.

Cave Canem Mosaic Set based on a template from Pompeii

In the autumn of 79 AD, the Roman city of Pompeii was almost completely buried by the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius. At that time, 8,000 - 10,000 inhabitants lived in this town in the southwest of the country. Due to preceding earthquakes, many inhabitants had already left their homes days before.
The city remained buried under a layer of volcanic ash and pumice, at times up to 25 meters high, for almost 1500 years before being made accessible to researchers and excavated in the 18th century.

From the vestibule of the house of the "Tragic Poet" (The Homeric House), comes the Cave Canem mosaic, which was intended to warn visitors and intruders of the watchdog. It served as the template for our Cave Canem mosaic kit.

This old Pompeian house, about whose inhabitants nothing else is known, amazes archaeologists and visitors today. It is very simply designed in the typical regional style but features a series of extraordinary mosaic floors and frescoes, whose high quality and beauty made it famous beyond the country's borders.

With the Cave Canem mosaic kit, you can awaken joy in crafting, history, and art not only among dog lovers.

After laying the stones, the mosaic can be additionally grouted with commercially available joint compound. However, if the stones are laid relatively closely together, grouting is not necessary.

Mein erstes Mosaikbild
Für mein Mosaikbild, das 88 × 88 Pixel hat, habe ich 4 × 22 Steine jeweils einer Farbe nebeneinander gelegt und ausgemessen. Bin dann auf eine Länge von 89 cm gekommen. Am Ende ging es sich nach unten hin nicht ganz aus, und ich habe noch 5 mm Holz dazu geklebt.
