Mosaic tiles by shape

The world is colorful - especially the one from antiquity!

Mosaic-Shop stands for quality!
A mosaic artist is only as good as their experience. It takes years of experience to create a mosaic that is both artistically and technically high quality. A mosaic artist is a craftsperson who designs and executes mosaics. In antiquity, these craftsmen always signed their works. Notable workshops include the Mayer's Court Art Institute, mosaic schools in Ravenna, and the Rhineland Mosaic Workshop.

To give you an idea of what Mosaic-Shop and the person behind it are all about, I would like to briefly introduce myself:

My name is Andreas Hopson.
• Member of the German Archaeological Association e.V.
• Member of the West and South German Association for Antiquity Research e.V.
• Phoenix-Pompeii e.V. in cooperation with the Soprintendenza Naples, Italy

I have always been fascinated by the expressive, artistic mosaics of Roman antiquity. That's why I dedicated much time to the study of this ancient craft. I then gave lectures in schools on how these craftsmen were organized and what position they held in the society of that time. My specialty is the craftsmanship techniques of ancient mosaic artists. We live history! It is important for our children to know history, especially their own. Without history, we would not be here today! Since we were frequently asked where to buy mosaic materials, we launched the online Mosaic-Shop.

Here you can view the most common materials, sizes, colors, and even some tools, templates, and informational materials. Do you have a special request? We are happy to assist you with advice and help. Sometimes an idea forms in your head, but the execution is difficult. We can help with that!

Mosaics have therapeutic effects!

The creation of mosaics requires creativity, perseverance, skill, and a good eye for color and form combinations. This work is relaxing and brings a sense of accomplishment. It creates a piece of art that, for example, children (school) can enjoy for a long time. Children can give their parents a piece of history that they have made themselves! Not many can say that! Children gain a higher level of skill, endurance, and creativity through this process. Laying mosaics is never boring because there are countless colors, shapes, and materials. Creativity knows no bounds! Teenagers often complain in art class that it's too boring. This is an opportunity to make it more interesting and lively. It's not necessarily the case that it has to be ancient designs.

It is possible to create templates for animals, symbols, landscapes, or motorcycles and then design mosaics. We love history, but the Mosaic-Shop is also for crafters, teachers, and anyone who wants to explore and create the colorful world of mosaic stones!

Our selection - Your variety!

It is characterized by the high-quality production or the special material from which the stones are made. The surface texture, strength, material, size, height, color, and the laid pattern determine the effect of a mosaic. A pattern once laid with marble stones and once with Murano Glass Stones creates a completely different effect on the viewer. Due to the special nature of the material, light effects are very prominent. Murano glass stones are a different material than mother-of-pearl. Glass manufacturers from Murano, Italy are world-famous for the quality and color intensity of their products. Mother-of-pearl is known for the unique shimmer of the material. The very specific structure of Marble reflects the flair of Greek antiquity. Tiffany mosaic stones are great for modern designs (Art Nouveau artist Louis Comfort Tiffany). These can be used for both outdoor and indoor areas and are commonly used for designing lanterns, window mosaics, and lamps. The 24k gold stones shimmer even more than amber, making the final product look elegant. Glass Nuggets (Muggle stones) achieve their special effect through their height and vibrant color play. They are very durable and have a unique effect as table decoration. Very special effects can be created with mirror mosaic stones and flip ceramics. Mirror Mosaic Stones are often used for garden accessories. Mosaic Tiles and Byzantine stones make the hearts of antique lovers beat faster. Through shapes such as polygonal, square, cube-shaped, irregular, and round, different heights also emerge. This makes it easy to achieve impressive effects. The height of the stones ranges from 1 mm to 8 mm. Whether plastic or natural materials, there is something for every taste!

Techniques and tricks for laying mosaics!
Mosaic stones can be used to beautify mirrors, vases, bowls, garden tables, etc. Mosaics are also excellent as wall artworks. There are glues for both absorbent and non-absorbent surfaces (adhesion!). For spheres, glue with slow-flowing properties or 3D silicone is used. Mosaics are suitable for both outdoor and indoor use. However, particular attention should be paid when purchasing the grout (weather-resistant!). Cold glaze makes mosaics scratch and frost-resistant! For beginners, creative sets are just right! They contain all the materials, accessories, and instructions needed for the first steps and are perfect as a gift!

Laying methods
There is a distinction between direct and indirect laying methods. The direct method is the oldest way of laying mosaics. Here, the stones are immediately set in fresh glue/mortar. The unevenness of the surface is intentional and creates a distinctive yet appealing structure. This allows for more spontaneous work. Plastic modeling and any shaping are the essence of this laying method. This method also allows for a larger range of materials, such as pebbles or shells. In the indirect technique, an intermediate step is inserted. The design is applied in reverse on the mosaic paper. Larger images are divided. Water-soluble glue is used as the adhesive. The front is on the paper. The back is visible. After laying, the mosaic is placed "wet on wet" at the final location (iron box, floor, or wall). The paper is then removed with water. The mosaic is now presented in all its splendor. Since the stones are set on the paper, the surface is smooth. The indirect method allows for the correction of mistakes, as more time is available. The possibility of division allows for larger works. For large-scale compositions, the indirect technique is very advantageous.
